The internet and the age of big data offers researchers interested in narrative a wealth of material for study, holding out the possibility of studying stories and narrative at scales hitherto unimaginable. Yet, this situation is not unprecedented. The early collections of folklore, created during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, can be seen as the predecessors of the age of big data in the study of culture. In this presentation, we start with a consideration of what knowledge gains can be made through the use of machine learning techniques and historical-GIS on a nineteenth century corpus of folklore that has been made machine-actionable. We move on to considerations of classifiers that reveal the porousness between boundaries, rendering visible the grey areas that exist in many classificatory schemes, as well as considerations of the benefits of approaches that allow researchers to move from the macroscale through the mesoscales to the microscale and back again, an approach we label "the folklore macroscope". We end with a consideration of narrative framework aggregation at scale, a new method that allows one to extract underlying narrative frameworks from millions of posts and comments on internet blogs.

Timothy R. Tangherlini is a professor of folklore at the University of California, Los Angeles. His books include, Interpreting Legend (1994; 2015), Talking Trauma: Storytelling Among Paramedics (1998), and Danish Folktales, Legends and Other Stories (2013). He recently guest edited a special issue of the Journal of American Folklore on "Computational Folkloristics" and directed a semester long program at the National Science Foundation’s Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics on the data-driven analysis of culture. His research has been supported by the NSF, the NIH, the NEH, the ACLS, the Mellon Foundation, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, the Fulbright Foundation, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and Google.
